Visitors

I love having visitors. Having friends and family come down to live the dream with me and my guard friends for a few days is absolutely blissful. I don't really understand why more of my friends have not come down; it's a free vacation with a bunch of fun, attractive, interesting people who love the beach and are more than excited to show outsiders the way we live. It's incredibly easy to entertain visitors here. There are always guards off duty willing to hang out with us on the beach to play volleyball, go surfing, day drink...whatever suits your fancy. At night, we take them to special spots like Penny's Hill (a giant sand dune on north beach), the Whalehead Club to go crabbing, Cosmos (best pizza place on Earth), and of course Sundogs, our local bar. People end up loving it so much they usually stay a few extra days, or a few extra months as in the case of Backyard Burt.

The only downside for visitors is that they are not allowed to stay in our house. So this means that our skate park backyard turns into "tent city"; at any given time there is at least one tent haphazardly set up in the sand. On busy weekends, like the fourth of July, tent city is a bumping microcosm of visitors. Last year, we had a permanent resident of tent city named Burt. He became one of us; every day I would come home from work and Burt would be in the Man Cave with whoever was off watching surf movies or playing Wii. We dubbed him "backyard Burt" and welcomed him into our community with open arms. But then Backyard Burt went to the bar on night and had a little bit too much to drink. We woke up one morning to a profane message written on our kitchen wall in none other than Backyard Burt's blood. Backyard Burt has not been seen since, and the stains from the blood graffiti still linger on the drywall.

This weekend, we had three friends from home come to visit Corolla for 3 days. It was hilarious...a merging of my Penn State/high School life and my Corolla life. We had an absolute blast. The first night we hung out around the house while the boys met everyone and had epic ping pong battles. The next day, we hung out on the beach all day, enjoying some beach beers, a bit of zorbing, a little surfing. We went crabbing at night, caught about 30 crabs and had a HUGE crab boil feast. The next day was the most perfect beach day ever; warm, clear water, 80 and sunny...we played water polo in the ocean and just played like children all day in the sand. That night we went to Penny's Hill to leap off the dunes (and Chris nearly broke his face in the sand), and watch the sunset. It was an incredible weekend with incredible friends, and I am so happy that they could come and share Corolla with me. So all of you lame-o's who are reading this debating on whether or not they should make the drive....GET HERE. I promise it will be worth your while.
